Also known as marine mechanics, motorboat mechanics or marine technicians, these are the people who spend their day jobs working on some of the most luxurious, high end machines on the planet.
The role of yacht mechanics involve the service and repair inboard and outboard motors. They can work on watercraft engines powered by gas or diesel, including such vessels as private and commercial fishing boats, cabin cruisers and yachts.
To become a yacht mechanic, the prospective person must begin by taking postsecondary vocational or technical classes on motorboat maintenance and repair. These classes will help to make a candidate more desirable to an employer because they require less on-the-job training.
Also important is the certification that the yacht mechanic has obtained. The American Boat and Yacht Council offers a variety of certification courses, many of which pertain directly to marine mechanics.
The work itself might be outdoors, in adverse weather conditions which could be less than optimal, otherwise indoors, usually in a repair shop.
