Boating Safety – Fire Extinguishers

When it comes to boating the fire extinguisher is one of the most important safety items. However not all motorboats are required to fit them and as a result, they are often left absent. However, it is highly recommended that at least one fire extinguisher is kept on a boat at all times, regardless of its size or function. There are numerous types of fire extinguishers available, however, it may need to be approved by the coast guard in order to be used.

Fire Extinguishers are classified by letters and numbers according to their size and class. The letters they are labelled by (A, B, C or D) indicates the class and type of fire they should be used on. The number is the measure of the capacity of the extinguisher. If the extinguisher has a larger number, it has a greater capacity of extinguishing material to put out a fire.
